The Ottawa PGA Zone Championship

The Cornwall Golf & Country Club provided a great venue for the 31st. Ottawa PGA Championship. The weather was great and the course was in very good shape with the greens being fast. The greens being as fast as they were gave many players fits and some still thinking about their four putts.

The course proved to be tough enough that no one was able to break par on the first day with two players tied at even par, Scott Johnson from the Eagle Creek golf club and Chris Barber from the Landings Golf Facility in Kingston who was in position to capture the Championship for a third straight year. There were many players close enough to the lead to make the second day very interesting.

Chris's attempt was foiled by an exceptional round of four under par 68 for a total of 143 by Graham Gunn who is a three time winner of this event. Chris Barber and Scott Johnson finished tied for second with a total of 145.

The Ottawa PGA thanks Acushnet Canada (Titleist) for sponsoring this event which is also a qualifying event for the Club Pro Championship held in Florida in November. The top five Club Professionals are exempt to play in the Florida event which is made up of the top Club Professionals from across Canada.

The Canadian Professional Golfer’s Association of Ottawa held the Assistant’s 36 hole Championship at the 6700 yard Dragonfly Golf Links in Renfrew Ontario. The field started play at 8am for the first 18 and after everyone was in Roger Beale from the Marshes led the field with a fine 6 under par 66. Following close behind were Chris Barber from the Landings in Kingston with a 4 under 68 followed by Scott Johnson from Eagle Creek at 2 under 70. The afternoon round started at 1pm and when all was said and done two players were tied at 9 under par. Roger Beale and Chris Barber went head to head in a playoff with Roger Beale winning on the third extra hole.

This score shattered the previous record of 5 under par which has been in existence for 31 years. Also today produced three of four team members that will represent the Ottawa PGA at the National Championship to be held in Montreal this September, they are Roger Beale, Chris Barber, Scott Johnson and the fourth member will be decided by an 18 hole playoff between Gregg Foley and Joe Dubinski. This is a very strong team and have the chance to bring the team championship back to Ottawa.

The Ottawa PGA Senior Championship for the Stan Kolar Trophy was played at the Mississippi Golf Club on July 23rd. The golf course was in mint condition and a great day was had by all. The youngest to join the Senior ranks was Malcolm Trickey from Kingston formerly the Pro-Manager at the Mississippi Golf Club and the oldest Eddie Dunn 77 who almost shot his age again this year, Eddie also worked at the Mississippi Club in 1954.

Stan Kolar will always be remembered for being a great all round Golf Professional, he achieved the highest rank within the Canadian PGA by becoming a Master Professional, he was an excellent teacher and won many tournaments during his career and was noted as being a great club maker being able to manufacture drivers and fairway woods from a block of wood.

It was only fitting that his son Terry Kolar Head Professional at the Pakenham Highlands Golf Club would be the eventual winner of the 2007 Senior Champioship. Terry defeated Marc Gelinas Executive Professional at the Outaouais Golf Club on the first extra hole of a playoff. Both players had rounds of 70 in regulation play. Listed below are some of the scores for the different age groups.

The Ottawa PGA Summer Open Sponsored by Cleveland Golf and hosted by the Outaouais Golf Club in Rockland Ontario turned out to be a great day after all night showers and heavy morning rain. The golf course was in remarkable shape considering all the rain.

The turn out was great with more than 40% of the membership playing in the event. The eventual winner was Scott Johnson from the Eagle Creek Golf Club with a fine one under par 71.

The Senior Division played from the advanced tees was won by Barry Laphen from the Camelot Golf Club with a three under par round of 69.
